Golfing Basics: Equipment

The most obvious equipment you'll need when golfing are the clubs and balls. Technology has advanced the game of golf in the last several years. As a result, there are myriads of choices amongst clubs, balls, and tees.

First of all, if you are a beginner or an occasional weekend golfer, don't worry about having the fanciest equipment. Unless you're an avid player or a professional, the most recent technology won't be worth the price.

Other Equipment

Glove

It is a good idea to wear a golf glove. This will aid in providing good grip, which will literally give you a better handle on the situation.

Golf Shoes

Your shoes should be durable and waterproof. Again, don't worry about getting the most expensive, but do consider how often you will be wearing them. Not having waterproof golfing shoes will cost you comfort when the course is wet. Your focus needs to be on your game and not your feet.

Sunglasses, Hat, and Sunscreen

Obviously you will be spending a lot of time in the sun. You should also consider how well sunglasses and a hat can shade your eyes making it easier to golf on a bright, sunny day. You're outside. Wear sunscreen.

Golf Cart

Okay, this one is optional. If you don't mind carrying your clubs from hole to hole for 18 holes, then don't worry about having a golf cart. On the other hand, if you have any health issues that preclude endurance exercising, get a golf cart. They come in battery or fuel powered.

Putters

Go for basic practicality and for comfort. Choose a putter that feels good for you. It isn't about the material or how long the handle is until it comes down to the individual. Try several different putters until you find the one that feels comfortable for you.

About those Clubs, Balls, and Tees

Clubs include woods, irons, wedges and putters. Different situations will require different clubs. Remember you are allowed 14 clubs on the course and this includes putters.

If you just starting out in golf; be aware that you will lose a lot of golf balls. As long as they aren't damaged, it doesn't matter if you go cheap on these while you practice and learn.

There are several varieties of tees to choose from. Technology has found even the simplest tool like the tee and transformed into a specialized item. The basic equipment is fine and certainly less expensive. What type of tee you get is your decision.

Finally, if you need some one-on-one assistance with choosing golf equipment, you should go to your local sports store. Even better, find one that specializes in golf exclusively. They should be able to help you match your equipment to your particular golfing needs.
